Astral Café – Westminster
by @vonlehmann
I owe this discovery to work friends who encouraged me to investigate a little further beyond its tiny-looking triangular frontage, as it is impossible to ignore, but also appears to be looking apparently impossible to find a seat. Step inside, though, and it’s pure TARDIS – much roomier than expected, and even on busy days the hard-working team always found us some room.
Its popularity as a Black Cab stop says everything: drivers know where the good food is, and the place became more known as “The Cabbie Caff” than by its actual name.
🥄 Spoonometer Score: 4.0/5
Vibe – 5/5
Warm, lively and instantly familiar. A diverse crowd fills the room, with cab drivers often flashing their licence badges as they’ve wandered out of a ’70s cop show. Despite the bustle, you settle in quickly.
Formica Flair – 2/5
Not much in the way of décor, but the classic caff spirit is all in the staff and regulars – proper working people grabbing their lunch, creating that honest, functional atmosphere.
Heritage Factor – 3/5
The corner façade has a retro charm, thanks in part to Astral House – the 1960s building in which the café is situated. The café itself is only around a decade old, and most of the seating is plain. The food takes centre stage rather than the surroundings.
Bargain-o-Meter – 5/5
Excellent value for central London. Plenty under a tenner, from hearty plates to dessert-like dishes that will fill you up without needing a full main.
Yum Factor – 5/5
Generous breakfasts with great sausages, plus strong Italian and Portuguese influences thanks to the staff’s heritage. This means excellent pastries and, in my view, some of the best homemade pies in London. If cherry or apple pie is your weakness, get it – with custard if you’re sensible.
Honourable Mention
Astral Café nails a continental-British blend: good coffee at fair prices, great pastries without needless cream, and solid British staples if that’s your preference. One thing’s certain – you might leave far more stuffed than planned.
Location: 8 Regency St, London SW1P 2EB
