Max Cafe – South Lambeth
by @vonlehmann
In the 60s and 70s, Portuguese families shaped this part of South Lambeth into what became known as Little Portugal. While the region evolved, Max Cafe was already on the grill.
Serving this road for well over half a century, it hasn’t needed reinvention. We had the chance to meet Max – the man himself, a true gent from Cyprus, still serving the community decades on.
🥄 Spoonometer Score: 4.4/5
Vibe – 4/5
Calm when we arrived, but with a steady circulation of regulars workers, residents, and solo coffee drinkers. Order at the counter, take a seat, and the rhythm reveals itself.
Formica Flair – 4/5
Some of the iconic blue Formica has gone, replaced by classic wooden tables. Still functional, still honest. Handwritten menu boards and wall mementoes marking years of service.
Heritage Factor – 4/5
More than 50 years on the same stretch of road. In modern London terms, that’s serious staying power.
Bargain-o-Meter – 5/5
Classic breakfast sets around a tenner, including a hot drink (and refills). Roasts available. Generous plates at grounded prices.
Yum Factor – 5/5
Full English delivered: proper sausage, well-cooked bacon, runny eggs, generous beans, chips on the plate, toast on standby. My colleague’s chilli-cheese jacket potato looked like the kind of order you plan your return around.
And that’s exactly what we’ll do.
