The Hope Cafe

The Hope Workers Cafe – Islington
by @vonlehmann

I’ve had a long-running caffmance with this place – every time I passed its hand-painted façade, I felt the pull to finally step inside. At last I did, and the long-overdue visit was worth every minute. Just make sure you’ve got cash on you: in a world racing towards the digital, The Hope remains proudly old-school.

🥄 Spoonometer Score: 4.0/5

Vibe – 4/5

A true community hub where everyone seems to be treated like family. Even on my first visit, I found myself chatting with owner Sue Anayiotou, who has run the cafe with her husband, Chris, since 1991. I complimented her on a perfectly brewed Tetley – a genuinely lovely cuppa.

Formica Flair – 4/5

Opened in 1937, the establishment embodies a genuine blue-collar spirit. The cast-iron Britannia motifs on the tables are brilliant, but the real charm lies in its unpretentious, functional design – simple, sturdy, and quietly elegant.

Heritage Factor – 4/5

There’s a strong sense that very little has changed over the decades – in the best possible way. It’s a living example of “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”, preserving the personality that so many cafés lose when modernised unnecessarily.

Bargain-o-Meter – 5/5

Plenty under a tenner, daily specials, and hearty set meals. The food is homely and generous. The owners’ Greek heritage adds lovely variety to the menu – but remember: it’s cash only.

Yum Factor – 3/5

Solid, satisfying plates. I opted for a classic British set breakfast, while my companion enjoyed a scrumptious moussaka. Choosing between cultures is, in fact, the hardest part – a very good problem to have.

Final Note:

This is Arsenal territory, so on match days the place gets packed. Decide whether that’s something to avoid – or the perfect moment to soak up the atmosphere.
